The Discomfort of Anxiety
Anxiety can be a painful and, at times, debilitating experience in Topeka, Kansas. I provide virtual therapy throughout Kansas to help you learn to regulate your anxiety while also paying attention to what it may be trying to tell you. Together, we can explore what may be underneath your anxiety so you can develop a deeper understanding of yourself and what you are experiencing.
Anxiety can often block us from recognizing what we are really feeling underneath. When we ignore that anxiety is there, it can keep us feeling stuck and, at times, confused about what we are truly experiencing or feeling. This can worsen anxiety. Learning to pay attention to our anxiety can help us better understand what may be happening underneath it.
When you notice a tightening in your chest, racing heart, or tension in your shoulders, back, or jaw, I will invite you to gently notice these sensations without judgment. We will explore whether deeper or uncomfortable emotions may be underneath them and work toward embracing those feelings rather than becoming overwhelmed by them. Together, we will build your ability to tolerate difficult emotions in a way that respects your cultural, religious, and/or personal beliefs, values, and what feels right and safe for you.
As you become more aware of the signs and patterns of your anxiety, you can begin to recognize when it is showing up and learn ways to ground yourself in those moments. Anxiety may feel like a threat, but it can also be information from our body about something we may not yet have noticed, understood, or had the opportunity to explore.
My goal is to help you develop a more compassionate understanding of your anxiety, not simply to make it go away, but to learn to regulate it, better understand yourself, and feel more grounded in your life.
